On November 10th and 11th, over 250 young people, adult advisers, and youth allies from schools and communities throughout Maine (and Vermont and Alaska!) gathered at the Augusta Civic Center to grow as leaders and advocates. Those in attendance not only left feeling inspired and empowered but also returned home with plans to influence positive change in their own communities!

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has."
~Margaret Mead
MYAN believes youth are essential partners in creating community change of all types, and that we all have the capacity to be involved and effective citizens. Our work at MYAN is to empower and prepare youth and adults to partner to create lasting, positive change.
In the fall of 2009, the Old Orchard Beach Youth Tobacco Action Group attend the MYAN Anti-Tobacco Summit and created an action plan focused on making OOB beaches tobacco-free. Since that time, youth surveyed residents and visitors in downtown OOB, did extensive research and education on the impact of tobacco litter on the beaches, educated the OOB Town Council on the health risks of exposure to secondhand smoke for people using the beach, presented two workshops to educate the Town Council on tobacco-related issues, and enlisted local partners, residents, and other students to support and assist in their efforts. As a result of their hard work, persistence, and determination, on Tuesday, November 16th 2011, the Old Orchard Beach Town Council approved a voluntary resolution requesting that tobacco products not be used on OOB beaches!
The OOB Youth Tobacco Action Group has continued to attend MYAN skill-building events and taken advantage of MYAN resources to support their efforts. We are super excited by their success and very proud to be able to share the positive outcome of their hard work and the utilization of advocacy skills they gained at the MYAN events.
